Meet our Member: Moventas – Geared for new energy

Moventas started to implement APQP4Wind to further align internal processes and develop their customer cooperation and development cycles. Now, they are a dedicated APQP4Wind Company Member aiming at full alignment across all implementation processes and levels and motivated to help mature and unify the global wind industry.

State-of-the-art wind turbine gearboxes

Moventas is a wind turbine drivetrain expert, concentrating on gearbox technology development, manufacturing, and multibrand services. The company is especially known for its state-of-the-art wind turbine gearbox and service solutions, with comprehensive drivetrain simulation capabilities as well as an innovative technology vision and road mapping.

While Moventas’ headquarters are in Jyväskylä in Central Finland, they have sales, service, and procurement offices across the world in locations such as Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and USA.

Innovative gearbox manufacturers

When an increasing market niche within wind was identified, Moventas was prompted to start designing and manufacturing specialized gearboxes for the growing wind industry. Until then, gearboxes for wind turbines had been based on modified industrial gearboxes.

As one of the first original wind gearbox manufacturers, Moventas has been able to remain an independent manufacturer and multibrand service provider of wind gearboxes with a unique know-how and product offering. Since the original kW class turbines and all the way to the modern multimegawatt turbines, Moventas has been serving major wind turbine manufacturers.

Ensuring APQP4Wind alignment on all levels

Moventas began their APQP4Wind journey already in 2018, where they started the internal preparations of its implementation. In 2020, the first round of APQP4Wind training courses and certifications were completed, and Moventas became a dedicated APQP4Wind Company Member.

Currently, all critical staff members have completed the Management Awareness and Specialist training courses, with a cross-functional team driving the APQP4Wind implementation throughout the company.

The company’s sourcing team is also using the available tools, with Moventas’ new technology, new concept, and new product implementation processes expected to be fully aligned with APQP4Wind during 2021. Continued training takes place as keystones are achieved, ensuring APQP4Wind alignment on every level of the company.

Smooth processes with APQP4Wind

The company’s current flagship product is the Exceed gearbox technology platform, which was launched in 2014. The Exceed (2014), Exceed Evo (2018), and Exceed Evo+ (2020) gearboxes have all been industry innovators with their size envelopes, torque density and proven technology innovations. During the Exceed Evo+ project, Moventas applied APQP4Wind tools and practices, and aspects such as product documentation, design, control planning, etc., were utilized and aligned with the APQP4Wind protocols. The process was smooth because Moventas had already implemented the tools in their existing protocols. Motivated to help mature the wind industry As a quality-driven gearbox manufacturer who has always prided themselves by being at the forefront of the wind industry, Moventas sees the APQP4Wind standardization and best practices as a welcome addition to their ambition. They are therefore happy to be a part of the APQP4Wind Community which will help develop, mature, and unify the industry, Head of Global QEHS, Maija Kolehmainen says:
The benefits APQP4Wind has brought have been important developmental steps for the maturing of the wind industry. It is great to be a part of this implementation and the journey of unifying the industry. APQP4Wind helps tie manufacturers and suppliers closer together in their processes, to better serve the end customers.
Maija Kolehmainen, Head of Global QEHS at Moventas

Moreover, Maija Kolehmainen expresses that APQP4Wind will help further solidify Moventas’ global supply chain and improve manufacturing scaling to suit the needs of the continually growing wind sector. She adds that the tools and processes that APQP4Wind offers will help align Moventas’ already robust internal processes, as well as further develop their operation for customer cooperation and faster development cycles.

Moventas is also excited about the opportunities APQP4Wind can offer to the wider public. Aiming towards lowering the levelized cost of energy (LCoE) further and improved asset handling throughout product lifecycles will result in more clean renewable wind energy around the world.
