Meet our Member: Mobil™ – Lubrication solutions engineered for confidence
A history of firsts
The Mobil™ brand belongs to ExxonMobil, one of the world’s largest suppliers and marketers of fuels, lubricants, and related services. The company has been at the forefront of lubricant technology innovation for more than 150 years, enabling technological achievements such as the first gasoline-powered automobile, the first powered flight, and the first space shuttle launch.
Continuing this history of firsts, ExxonMobil recently became the first petroleum products company to receive UL’s Zero Waste to Landfill Silver Validation for its Mobil lubricants plants. Secured by diverting over 90% of waste towards new and productive uses, this achievement demonstrates the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and helping customers make more sustainable lubricant choices.
This same pioneering spirit is applied throughout the entire Mobil business, inspiring innovative lubrication solutions to help customers in every industry lower costs, improve productivity, and enhance equipment efficiency. Solutions such as Mobil SHC™ Gear 320 WT – the first lubricant certified by DNV to not contribute to the formation of damaging white etching cracks (WEC) – the company’s first lubricant solution to be sold with a 10-year warranty.
Tailored lubrication solutions for the wind industry
Wind turbine operators are aware of the critical role played by lubricants in machine performance. To sustain maximum power output, it is essential to reduce unscheduled and costly downtime for maintenance and repairs and to do this with evermore extreme conditions of temperature, load, and water contamination. The Mobil team offers tailored lubricant solutions to meet these rapidly evolving challenges, helping turbine operators progress the energy transition with their unique products, services, and application expertise.
The Mobil range of high-performance synthetic oils and greases is formulated to protect critical components and enhance wind turbine availability and is supported by extensive equipment builder approvals. The product line-up includes gearbox lubricants designed to protect against oil-related effects of white etching cracks (WEC), flushing oil, hydraulic oils, and greases with several exciting innovations in the pipeline for 2022.
To help wind customers worldwide achieve peak productivity, Mobil also offers Mobil ServSM – a full suite of services designed to help optimize equipment performance and oil drain intervals. These services include Wind Turbine Gearbox Flush and Fill, start-up and cleanliness guidance, as well as Mobil ServSM Lubricant Analysis, with a program specifically tailored to wind turbine applications.
Mobil’s comprehensive and innovative lubrication solutions are complemented with hands-on guidance and application expertise from the company’s team of skilled engineers, dedicated to helping wind turbine operators reach new levels of safety and environmental care, as well as productivity.
APQP4Wind inspires collaborative innovation
A key driver of Mobil’s innovation is the company’s close collaboration with industry bodies and leading OEMs to understand equipment trends and lubricant requirements, consult on lubrication system designs, and troubleshoot field lubrication challenges. This enables Mobil to formulate high-performance products to handle the most challenging operations and extreme environments – including the world’s most remote offshore wind farms.
The company’s history with APQP began in the automotive sector, where Mobil has followed the APQP approach – pioneered by automotive OEMs – for decades. Embracing the APQP4Wind framework was, therefore, a natural next step. About the implementation of APQP4Wind, Global Equipment Builder Offer Advisor at ExxonMobil, Umut Ürkün, says:
“Through our discussions with our customers, we know that APQP4Wind is gaining traction as a common frame of reference in the wind industry. We’ve adopted their framework so we can better address lubrication challenges facing the sector, as well as introduce solutions that speak to a variety of needs. This approach not only strengthens quality assurance but also enhances OEM and supplier collaboration. We are delighted to become part of the APQP4Wind family.”
Becoming an APQP4Wind Company Member enables Mobil to showcase its commitment to standardized quality and process simplification, guaranteeing consistent standards across the wind industry. Several employees have already completed in-depth APQP4Wind training across Mobil’s marketing, quality assurance, and product development teams, helping ensure total alignment.
The APQP4Wind company membership is an important seal of quality in the wind energy sector, Europe Commercial Manager - Energy at ExxonMobil Fuels & Lubricants, Elisabetta Scossa, says, and continues:
