Meet our Member: FT Technologies – outstanding wind sensors

FT Technologies started to implement APQP4Wind in early 2019, when they realized the benefits it would make for their customers. Now, they are a fully engaged APQP4Wind Company Member focusing on full adoption of APQP4Wind, training all new employees in the methodology and encouraging key suppliers to adopt the concept.

Undisputed ultrasonic technology

FT Technologies specialises in designing and manufacturing ultrasonic wind sensors, which are unique due to their use of acoustic resonance for measuring wind speed, direction, and temperature. This patented technology is called Acu-Res® Technology and was invented by FT Technologies’ Executive Chairman.

The company’s head office is in Surrey, UK, where all sensors are designed and manufactured as well. As 99% of their products are exported, FT Technologies also has sales offices in Denmark and the USA and dedicated technical support staff in China.

With 12 of the world’s top 15 turbine manufacturers amongst their customers and over 80% of all offshore wind turbines using an FT sensor, FT Technologies is one of the industry’s largest suppliers and an undisputed global market leader in the offshore sector.

Implementing APQP4Wind benefits all customers

After a small group of their customers had started to ask them to sign up to the APQP4Wind standards, FT Technologies began the implementation of APQP4Wind in early 2019 when a group of over 40 employees attended APQP4Wind Management Awareness Training.

The training made FT Technologies realize the benefits that aligning with APQP4Wind would have for all their customers, and they decided to have two further employees attend APQP4Wind Specialist Training.

Now, FT Technologies has implemented a company-wide policy to introduce APQP4Wind quality standards throughout their entire management system, design processes and supply chain, Director of Operations, David Walch, states:

Being a key component to the continuous operation of a wind turbine, we understand that it is vital that our wind sensors are as consistent and reliable as possible. We have therefore implemented a company-wide policy to introduce APQP4Wind quality standards throughout our entire management system, product design processes and component supply chain.
David Walch, Director of Operations at FT Technologies

As part of the company-wide implementation, FT Technologies now has an APQP4Wind steering group that meets at least once a month. They have also assigned a quality representative for each stage of their current standard production process to work on PPAP documentation.

FT Technologies is currently in the process of transitioning towards full adoption of the APQP4Wind framework by the end of 2020 for all new and existing product development.

Their latest sensor, which is being specifically developed for typhoon conditions, is going through all the different phases of the APQP4Wind framework with full PPAP documentation for every stage of product and process design and validation.

The company has now become a fully engaged APQP4Wind Company Member who changed their business landscape, trains all new employees in the APQP4Wind methodology, and encourages key suppliers to adopt APQP4Wind, as Senior Quality Engineer at FT Technologies, Arefeh Taghikhani expresses:

APQP4Wind is now a part of our culture. We have a new business landscape with better validation procedures. All new employees are trained in the APQP4Wind methodology, and we have even held a Supplier Quality Conference to engage our key suppliers in the adoption of APQP4Wind.
Arefeh Taghikhani, Senior Quality Engineer at FT Technologies

FT Technologies’ Arefeh Taghikhani also recently became an APQP4Wind Country Ambassador in the United Kingdom due to her dedication to APQP4Wind and helping other companies who are looking to implement APQP4Wind in their organization.
