Meet our Member: AMSOIL INC. – Devoted to Protection
AMSOIL INC. already had many APQP4Wind requirements integrated into its ISO 9001 Quality Management program before implementing all requirements in 2020 and becoming the first lubricant to get its employees APQP4Wind-certified. AMSOIL saw the APQP4Wind concept as an opportunity to provide its customers with confidence in the quality of its products and services.
“So far, two AMSOIL employees have completed formal APQP4Wind training,” says Vice President of AMSOIL Wind and Industrial Business, Dave Meyer, and continues: “We use the APQP4Wind framework to help document its quality-control processes and drive a proactive, preventive approach to business that reduces problems and improves customer satisfaction.”
AMSOIL decided to become a member soon after APQP4Wind was formed for continuous quality improvement, tells Dave Meyer and adds:
Not only does the APQP4Wind Membership allow AMSOIL to communicate its product capabilities and quality assurance processes in a standardized manner to its customers, but it also provides a venue for increasing the industry’s knowledge of lubricants to help solve common problems and increase equipment uptime.
Global synthetic-lubricant leader
AMSOIL INC. is the global leader in supplying synthetic lubricants to the wind industry. In 2005, AMSOIL entered the wind industry to solve a common problem – wind-asset managers were struggling to find a wind turbine gearbox lubricant capable of delivering superior protection without requiring frequent and expensive oil changes. Commonly used gearbox lubricants tended to absorb moisture, which led to additives separating from the lubricant. This led to micro pitting, which can cause gear failure. At the time, many asset managers could expect a high percentage of their gearboxes to fail within the first 10 years of their 20-year design life, driving up operating costs.
Putting their expertise to work for wind
The engineers at AMSOIL put their decades of synthetic-lubricant experience to work to solve the problem, which is what AMSOIL has been doing in other markets since company founder Al Amatuzio began commercially selling synthetic motor oil for automobiles in 1968. Synthetics deliver improved wear protection, stress resistance, and significantly longer service life compared to conventional oils. In 1972, AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil became the world’s first synthetic motor oil to meet American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements. It heralded a new age in lubrication engineering and engine protection.
AMSOIL did not stop with automobiles. The company went on to formulate a complete line of synthetic lubricants for use in a full range of applications, including motorcycles, diesel trucks, mining equipment, industrial applications, and renewable energy.
Today, the company boasts millions of loyal customers. Vehicle enthusiasts, maintenance managers, and industrial administrators around the globe rely on AMSOIL synthetic lubricants to get the best performance and longest life out of their vehicles and equipment. AMSOIL products are available in more than 80 countries, and they are used in nearly half the wind turbines in North America, while global shares continue to increase in China, India, Brazil, and Europe. AMSOIL has more OEM approvals than any other lubricant manufacturer, and many operators now require the use of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in their wind assets.
